I haven't looked into it but a friend of mine told me that it actually takes more energy and resources to create paper straws than plastic straws. That doesn't eliminate the biodegradable effect of course. I'm curious if we can create biodegradable plastic straws and meld the 2 issues?
There is another issue that is not talked about… Some people cannot use paper straws. They do not bend. Many people with disabilities need bendable straws in order to drink from restaurant glasses, fast food glasses and even glasses at home.
Until a better solution is found, why not offer both? Paper straws for the "eco-conscience" and plastic straws for those that need it.
