A minut fraction of the people get plastic syringes for illegal drugs than do the hundreds if millions that use straws for sucking liquids every day.
Starting somewhere is better than not starting at all. There's so much uneeded waste in Western society and it makes no sense to create a one use item that floats in the ocean for decades or doesn't decompose underground for even longer.
