To stick with the bakery comparison, you can compare this to the hypothetical situation where 99% of all bakeries in the whole world are ran by a handful of billionaires, who decide one day that they refuse to bake any wedding cakes for gay couples. Yes, the gay couple could travel for 4 days to the nearest bakery who does, and pay 10 times as much. Or order and wait for 4 days and pay 20 times as much -- only because they are banned to buy a cake in almost all bakeries where everyone else is allowed to go to.
