ok... some progress, but still strange.
I changed the time-out on my client to 100 seconds so I can now at least log in to the server.
But now: Transferring files to the server is fast. Refreshing the directory list is dead slow (about 80 seconds).
Sigh
Server is Redhat Enterprise 5 by the way.
