I totally agree that your area of endeavor matters. Webmaster starting 2002 had it a lot easier. Having said that I have a friend who made a really good living buying garbage trucks, setting up a route and then selling the business. He made and executed his plan. I have another friend who decided to stay in the same job for 15 years and retire in it. Job went away after 10 and he was out. He was making a poor living and had lots of opportunities to move up that he passed on. I think he was not planning but just hanging out.
So I started looking around. Tons of folks who work in low pay jobs have no plan to get out. They never seemed to be on any path. Add in people who just got comfortable and it is sort of why all jobs get filled.
