It's ignorant for anyone to say it and assume it means anything else just because you put an "a" instead of "er" on the end. You can say "bro", "brotha", or "brother" but it doesn't change the meaning. It's self degradation and any black man with some self respect doesn't use it. Black kids start using words like this (chaginging 'er' to 'a' or 's' to 'z') in school because they are picked on for "sounding white". Being intelligent and speaking proper English has a negative connotation to it.
