he does not swim for all 6 hours @1000 cal/hour...all olympians cross train...he does dry land workouts as well as non swimming stuff in the pool...
just to put things in perspective, phelps with his weight would burn 20 calories per minute if he sprinted or ran as fast as he possibly can...this is 1200 cal per hour...forget about the 1000 cal per hour for 6 hours...just forget about it
