Its very trendy IRL too. Friend of mines daughter has just turned 13, and all she wanted was to have her hair cut like a boy. She now calls herself non binary and it made her day when the waiter at her birthday celebration meal mistook her as a boy and called her 'mate' - Made her day...
It's nothing to do with sexual tastes. She's really not into boyfriends or girlfriends yet. It's more of just a trendy title she can give herself and also for her to enjoy the confusion of people who are not sure if she's a boy or a girl.
When I was that age, that sort of thing never entered my head, but that's because it wasn't being rammed down our throats 24/7 by the media I suppose...
