when I was taught about multiculturalism way back in school, it was frowned upon by my instructors for the reason you mentioned, it assimilates people instead of allowing them to maintain their culture. well, too bad, multiculturalism works. people can't move to another country and expect that country to change its culture to suit that person's culture.
