Agreed completely. But if she is on foodstamps, clearly it isn't going too well.
My belief on paying for an education in the arts is this (and I say this as someone who derives a big chunk of my income from writing):
If you go to college to study something in the arts, you have to go into it assuming you will not get a job in that field unless you create one for yourself. If you find yourself with student debt and no job in that field, you have nobody to blame but yourself. It's a very hard field to break into.
Now, that said, I think everyone would benefit from a college education and this country would be a better place if everyone had a college education. Personally, I think we need to work to lower the cost of education so if a person wants to go to college to study the arts, they can and they can do it without racking up a bunch of debt. It makes it easier to chase your dream and create your own job if you don't leave college up to your eyes in debt.
