I only see part of the conversation but my grandmother settled in Massachusetts from Belfast. I met quite a few people with brogues and loved them. Funniest was when at a doctor’s house and he fought with his daughter, Nikki. “Look, lass, yer a mick” had me puzzled at nine years old. At home I asked why he called her ‘mick’ and not ‘nick’ as in Nikki. Mom said it was a family joke. Years later I learned what he meant and mom said she didn’t want to teach me bad names to call people.

He died of alcoholism and after four marriages and countless affairs, she died of the same a few years ago. One daughter literally lives in rehab and a son is in jail for robbery and drug possession. Their mom died when they were young kids and maids and drunk dad raised them.

White tribalism indeed. South Boston is like walking through Belfast. Brogues and thicker brogues. When I lived on Beacon Hill, I’d go to a gay bar with two friends and just observe and drink diet Seven Up. The Irish accents among upper crust Boston accents was entertainment. Drunk crossdressers with thick brogues at Jacques’ was a hysterical nightmare come true!

Memories to fall asleep to ......
