Carlos Bustamante, a Stanford geneticist, conducted the requested DNA test on Warren. He compared her genetic history with European, African, East Asian, and Native American samples in making his evaluation.

“While the vast majority of the individual’s ancestry is European, the results strongly support the existence of an unadmixed Native American ancestor in the individual’s pedigree, likely in the range of 6-10 generations ago,” said Bustamante’s press release.

This puts Warren’s Native American ancestry between 0.09% and 1.5% of the total sample.

A 2014 Harvard study found that the average American of European descent can claim 0.18% Native American heritage. This data implies that Warren is potentially less Native American than the average American of Caucasian descent. Traditionally, most Native American tribes do not let individuals claim membership based on genetic-testing.
