I read this and was just shocked. It appeared she didn’t understand Spanish and fed up, she said, “speak English, we’re in Texas.” Racist? But her grandson’s response was harsh, racist and cruel. The guy recorded it but he didn’t call her names. If grandma is going to use crude sayings in public, then she can expect her words to be public.
Walmart worker to customer: Speak English since ‘we’re in Texas’
A Houston man says he is being physically threatened after sharing a video on social media of an exchange with a Walmart employee who told him to speak English “because we’re in Texas.”
Joel Aparicio posted a 40-second clip of himself Sunday at a Walmart in Pasadena, where he experienced problems with the megastore’s self-checkout machine. Aparicio asked a store employee if she spoke Spanish, and she told him no.
She managed to fix the problem before walking away. But when the same issue happened again moments later, the same employee returned and told Aparicio that he shouldn’t be in the United States if he couldn’t speak English, he said.
Aparicio told the Houston Chronicle that at that point, he started to record the interaction, beginning with him asking the employee if it’s “necessary” to speak English inside the store.
“Yes, because we’re in Texas,” the employee said.
“Only because of that?” Aparicio said.
The employee appeared to admonish Aparicio for continuing the conversation in Spanish, telling him no repeatedly before again telling him to use English.
“I don’t know which way you’re going to pay,” the employee then said while gesturing to the cash register.
Aparicio then made reference to the woman’s apparent lack of “green eyes,” saying she didn’t have the look of someone who only spoke English.
“I live in Texas, so I speak English,” the employee said while walking away.
Aparicio, a native of El Salvador who has spent 13 years in Houston, told the Chronicle that he’s been going to that Walmart for about 10 years.
“No one had ever treated me like that in that store,” he told the newspaper. “They’ve always been friendly.”
Aparicio later posted the exchange on Facebook and received a torrent of complaints, including one purportedly from the employee’s grandson who promised to harm Aparicio if they ever crossed paths.
“Say you f–king Mexican bitch,” the message from a man named Arthur Cantu read. “Learn some f–king English hoe ass n—a. If I find you, I’ma f–k you up big time for messing with my grandmother.”
Some Facebook users suggested that Aparicio “learn to speak English if it’s that big of a problem,” while others claimed he must’ve been rude to the woman because she’s been known to speak both English and Spanish during her years of employment at the store.
“I know that lady,” one woman replied. “And she NEVER talks s–t about people speaking Spanish … just because she speaks English back when you talk to her in Spanish doesn’t mean she’s ‘racista.’”
But some insisted that Aparicio was to blame, saying his “refusal to assimilate” led to the interaction.
Aparicio said he notified police regarding the threats. A call seeking comment from Pasadena police was not immediately returned.
Walmart officials told the Chronicle that the incident would be handled internally
