You are likely experiencing the "tourist effect." They know you are a tourist and treat you nicely because you will do things like give strangers money to drink Coke with them. I'm not saying there aren't nice people here, I have experienced similar things traveling in many places. However, I have a feeling if you weren't a tourist you would see more of the high crime side of the DR.
