Islam like Christianity and Judaism started out as a separatist religion. With tribal groups using it as a tool to punish/control others. The difference is that today most people adhere to a very loose religious Christianity and Judaism doctrine and more to none at all.
Muslims still adhere to a strict Islamic code and use it to stay apart from non Muslims and even kill each other. We see this in the ME with constant fighting or an authoritarian dictator killing all opposition.
