This is hysterical. Trump is sending down troops to make him look "strong" like he is "defending our borders" when the truth is our troops cannot do anything at all. It's federal law. Instead, they will be going down there in a "support" role - meaning they will be picking up horse shit. I am not kidding - they will actually be cleaning up horse shit.
This is how it actually works:
"They have been carrying out a variety of tasks assisting the U.S. Border Patrol in the months since their initial deployment, but all with one thing in common: They’re as far away from the border as possible. In reality, the hundreds of troops deployed in southern Arizona are keeping up the rear, so to speak; in one assignment, soldiers are actually feeding and shoveling out manure from the stalls of the Border Patrol’s horses."

This is how it will play out... Trump is going to "send a message" to his base that he is taking measures to protect Americans by sending troops down to the border. (That's comical in itself because we have no idea what part of the border they will be at, but whatever.) The press will then go down and talk to the troops, discover they are doing "busy work", the press will report it, and Trump will complain about "fake news" again.
