Religion is like any other belief. People largely take what they want from it to feel what they need to. Nothing more. They adhere to what makes them feel good... they dismiss anything that doesn't. And like any firmly held belief, a person will defend it to the end no matter how irrational.
Islam is simple. It's 1/2 Old Testament as told by someone who had a poor understanding of the Old Testament and 1/2 "how to kill the infidels". So basically fire and brimstone on top of how to slaughter anyone who disagrees... but where every verse is prefaced by Allah who is "all forgiving", "all merciful", "all loving" etc. So that makes it ok.
Mohammed was the perfect man. So perfect that every single writing about him had to be rounded up and destroyed and his entire life story rewritten and sanitized.
And Islam, like Christianity is all about "spreading the word of God" because even though God could create every particle in the universe ... he just couldn't' figure out how to talk to people unless it was through some uneducated sheep herder somewhere and ....
unfortunately God just couldn't seem to spread his message without conscripting armies to run around murdering people. Strange how that happens. God isn't a talker unless he's talking to a single person with military ambitions who happens to want to conquer neighboring tribes.
It's important to spread the world of God in Islam - this is why you'll often see Mosques in the USA with nothing but Arabic writing on them. Because really, what says "everyone is welcome" and "we are reaching out to everyone" better than a language which cannot be understood by locals.
