Religion is more defined by the individual in my view. People take from it what they want, dismiss what they don't. But there is pressure from the group (as with any group) to act as if everyone is on the same page and to present that image as if that is the case.
All religions are the same if you think about it. Moral laws. Criminal law. Hygiene/cleanliness. How to handle food. How to prosecute a war. How to deal with dead bodies etc. (minimizing disease). Rituals and holidays to help people stay on track. Holy days to make sure people stay on track. etc. They are all just a different way of achieving them same objective of helping a cooperative species cooperate better.
It's not the belief itself that matters as much as it is the fact that overall, people behave better with religion than without. There is group pressure. There is legal pressure. There is religious pressure. In addition to that, there is "someone is watching you all the time, 24/7 and you'll have to answer for anything that slips through the cracks" pressure which is very effective.
