I've never heard anyone call themselves a "Nationalist". Nationalism is less about the promotion of one nation, and more about maintaining sovereignty of their country. Nationalism is about how a nation should govern itself, free from outside interference and is linked to the concept of self-determination. The United States has had this since the day it was formed. In fact, in the United States we use the term "Patriot" instead of "Nationalist" (but then again Trump surely cannot call himself a patriot being as no one in his entire family has served in the US military in the past two hundred years).
Here in the United States, if you call yourself a Nationalist most people would assume you mean "White Nationalist". Combine this with the fact that Donald seems to like white nationlists ("Both sides have good people"), you can understand where the issue is.
The reporter who asked the question was an unknown of reporter for a news program no one has ever heard of (PBS does news now?). She asked a perfectly legitimate that half of Americans want an answer to. It surely isn't a racist question. Donald could have quickly answered the question by saying "I support my country, but I do not support white nationalism in any form" and that would have been it.
Let's just be truthful here.... Donald spend the past month on the road holding rallies for people he doesn't like who won't support him, they lost the house, the subpoenas are going to fly, and investigations into Trump and his people will become the new normal. He was upset, pissed off, and lashed out at the press which is unacceptable.
