I saw that the other day. I worried the dog would be hit by a car, be hungry or thirsty, or be dognapped. It breaks my heart to see how sad the dog is, looking around for the owner.

When I was fourteen, my mom was hospitalized for a few weeks with viral encephalitis. They weren’t sure she’d live. Our dog pooped in the playroom and he’d never done that. Next day, same thing. Our neighbor, a vet, said he was upset she wasn’t there and that’s his way of showing us.

Next day I snuck the 50 lb collie/shepard mix into the hospital. Old wing with stairs and she was at one end. My dog cried and kept licking her face and she perked up, too. Every day after school I’d walk over and sneak him in. Her doctor came in and gave permission for visits!

I’d walk into the house, say “wanna go see mommy?” and he’d run to the door. Yet when dad had two heart attacks, dog never cared. No mess, no visits.

If I was in the playroom watching tv and cried — some teen angst shit — he’d jump on the couch and lay down with his head in my lap. He’d lick the tears, snuggle in and help ease the tension.

It’s amazing that dogs have feelings and emotions and can sense when you need comfort. They mourn like humans.
