that's why historically forests were much smaller across the continent and fires much bigger... forest fires continually wiped everything out as part of the natural process of death/rejuvenation.
Drought has nothing to do with old growth, dead trees, either standing or littering the forest floors for years and drying out until a lightening strike or wandering idiot starts a fire.
