It's a bit of a pain in the ass.
My understanding is that you will have to apply for a green card. There are a variety of eligibility requirements. If you qualify and you get the card you are now a legal, permanent resident of the country. From there you can start the process of getting a citizenship. It can take years to go through that process and I'm not sure what all it entails.
