Oddly reminiscent of the treatment someone gets in high school, when they take it upon themselves to try to hang with the cliquey, rich, cool-kid crowd. The highest status they can ever hope for is that of a somewhat-tolerated "pet nerd", like Screech from Saved By the Bell.
But in the real world, people who are too dumb to take a hint that they're not wanted, are typically given quite harsh and unfair treatment until they eventually understand.
Is that treatment right, on a moral basis? Of course not. But is that the way it is? Yes.
If you don't believe me, go try to impose yourself on a clique that you're not a part of and not wanted in. You'll quickly get educated one way or another.
