A banya or banja (Russian: баня [ˈbanʲʌ]) is originally a Russian steam bath with a stove and has old Slavic roots. The small room or building designed as a place to experience dry or wet heat sessions or an establishment with one or more of these facilities always played an important role in the countries culture. The steam and high heat make the bathers perspire.
The banya is since ancient times an important place for communication in Russian culture. Through Russian history the banya was used by all classes of Russian society, most villagers and noble people had a banya in their houses. Communal baths were very common in villages and towns. Even today its a place where Russian businesspeople and politicians meet.
