So why have they traveled vast interstellar distances just to spook out the occasional fighter pilot? Are they 'testing our defences?' That would probably be like a human testing out the defence of an ant. Any civilization that could make such a trip would almost certainly be able to wipe humanity out in an instant. For that matter, they wouldn't even need probes to 'take a look' that we would notice. They could send microscopic nano probes or probes identical to insects or have a telescope in near space to observe everything they wanted to.
