It's a pretty common thing news orgs do. Huffington post has people staking out the DC district court and they file freedom of information requests on every single docket.

That's how they have been on top of a lot of stories. Now just think, it's not just one news group doing this stuff, its lots of them and you can bet they are covering any court house that might be related to any of the key figures in all this.
