Obviously, walls do work when you use them as a intended deteriant from a overwhelming force and you properly MAN THE WALL.
Problem here is, there is no overwhelming force and if you MAN THE AREA, you don't need the wall.
Otherwise the wall is a mere obstacle without being backed-up by MANPOWER.
A wall only slows your entry.

Well they had it then and it still did not work so well.
Same goes for the walls in Israel. How many would cross without men with guns ?
How many men to cover 1800 miles of border ? That's as many people as every state national guard +++. If you have them, you still don't need the wall. But they are much more effective.
