Of course they could not stop all illegals and drug smugglers but they most likely would get a decent handle on it.

As it is right now 80% of illegal immigrants and illegal drugs are coming through the ports of entry. The 20% goes around the ports of entry. We put walls and other barriers up where they tend to cross. In other areas, we use other methods. Putting up walls in other areas wouldn't change anything; It only would cost us more to build the walls, more to maintain them, and more to patrol.
We need border security where the problem is - the ports of entry where the drugs comes through - and not in places where there is no illegal activity.
