When it comes to speed there are a lot of variables that make a much bigger impact..

Efficient queries, compression, CDN, etc. Hell even just compressing your design images and making more use of CSS will make a big impact on speed.

I have a duplicate dev build that I'm upgrading to 7+ and that will help me really see just how much of a difference it will make. But they have changed the sql libraries and so much that in some cases I have to completely re-write entire modules.

But yeah.. Staying relevant is important. I've got a buddy that has a job maintaining existing programs written in cobol. He's been doing it so long that he's not up to date at all with anything else. So as a programmer you can see how that would be a problem if he lost that job.

Most good developers stay on top of the latest tech.
