Everyone claims to be against illegal immigration. But what have consecutive governments delivered? Claims that illegal immigration has gone down, assumes they have an accurate figure and that it will stay down.
Trump made it a corner stone of his campaign and won. Stupid or/and arrogant Democrats promised more of the same. That lost them the election.
In Europe the same thing is happening. The Far Right see what the people want and promise to them.
