Hello,
As we get closer we have a bit more clarity. There is no official dates yet, even the legislator whit whom we had meeting in Lisbon, can't give a real effective date.
What we do know, it will be within 2 weeks before or after Easter. Mid May at the latest.
Anyone who is giving you an official date at this very moment, is BSing you and maybe trying to get you to sign right now with fear of consequences.
But, no matter the date, it is coming...
" what should UK based porn webmasters do with servers based in USA/Canada?"
That's a good question
Answer:
What the law doesn't care about
:
- Where your business is based or incorporated
- That you have 1000 employees, or you're alone in your basement.
- That your sites are hosted on servers around the globe or in a closet in Nebraska...
What the law care about :
- Where THAT particular surfer on your site is based?
- If he's NOT in the UK, he goes right thru and you don't need to verify him
- If he is in the UK, then you need to verify him
- That you take diligent measures to ensure a proper verification method
- Diligent method IS NOT a 'Are you over 18?' [ YES ] [ NO ], that will not cut it
- There will be list of approved AV Services Providers
As GSpot mentioned, yes your site can be barred from UK, but it goes way further...
The UK Age Verification law has grip. And unlike some providers, I don't want to get into the spooky stuff and try to scare anyone...
If you're not complying :
- Yes they can shut down your sites in UK thru the ISPs
- They can also send a letter to your ancillary providers and get them to stop providing services for the UK, which include but not limited to : Hosting, Billing, Ad Networks, Traffic, etc.. Until you get your stuff straight.
- You might be responsible to make sure that your affiliates sites are also complying since they're providing you traffic thru their sites, blogs, etc...
- Bottom line is, better get compliant before those letters go out instead of contacting all of them to get your UK switch back to 'ON'.
I am pretty sure there will be a grace period (dunno how long, but kinda short I guess), Maybe 30-90 days...
