I was scrolling to find this, but the funny thing, while this things is quite often in popular culture and i use it often as well, it's not really explained why is number 42 an answer, so when i searched about it, it is because it's an ASCII Code for * character, which is normally used in programming and system administration to indicate "anything", so what author wanted to say, is how meaning of life, is to be anything you want.
