My high school United States History teacher always hated the phrase "melting pot."
He would go off on a rant about how the United States is not a melting pot at all, but more of a tossed salad.
You have your big bed of green lettuce. Then you have some cherry tomatoes. Some carrots. Some onion. Some olive. Some croutons.
Each ingredient part of the overall tossed salad, but confined in its own little unit.
