it's different for each state but they usually just have an alimony calculator. They plug in your earnings, how long you were married, and out comes a number that you have to pay.

But before I go into this, keep in mind the divorce rate here is something like 50%. So this is a common occurrence.

Check this out in Massachusetts.

I used this calculator here. I put in $2000 a week gross income which is roughly $100k a year. And with 10 years of marriage, you would have to pay $600-700 a fucking week for 72 months (6 years). PLUS, let's say you were putting $25k away a year for retirement, 1/2 of that goes to her too. Paid off your house? She's getting half of that too. Maybe a relative died and left you a 500k house? She gets half of that too.

And this is without kids! Imagine marrying someone who sat on their ass, didn't blow you, gained 50lbs, nagged at you - now you gotta pay her $700 a week for 60 months, give her $125k of your hard earned retirement money you saved, plus half of the house you paid off and whatever other assets you accrued.

Marriage is dangerous for men. Even if you "marry up" meaning you marry someone with a high earning potential, they'll always want kids. And when they have kids they will stop working.
