The groups that were doing most of the kidnappings were usually affiliated with Hezbollah and something few Westerners knew about was why there were so few Russians kidnapped as it was easy to pick up anyone there that didn't look like they were from that whole AOR.

Four Russian diplomats were kidnaped in September 1985 by Muslim extremists who demanded that Moscow pressure the Syrian government to stop pro-Syrian militiamen from shelling rival Muslim positions in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli.

Moscow basically said FUCK YOU, and the body of one of the Russian diplomats was found in a field near Beruit.

The KGB the kidnaped and killed a relative of an unnamed leader of the Hezbollah group, a that has been suspected of various terrorist activities against Western targets in Lebanon.

Parts of the man's body were then sent to the Hezbollah leader with a warning that he would lose other relatives in a similar fashion if the three remaining Soviet diplomats were not immediately released.

They were quickly freed.

The average minimum income for a Sri Lankan is $1700 USD a year. If you offered rewards upwards of $1 million USD for information leading to the arrests of the ringleaders of this terrorist event and you would have this solved in a weekend.
