Perhaps maybe that's just the way things were back then... People took care of their own problems and didn't go crying to government to fix everything for them.

I don't know how many innocent people have died over the centuries because of "people taking care of their own problem" but I am pretty sure it would be a mindblowing number.
Let's just take the Central Park Five as example since that's in the news again now - if things were like you wish, they would have been lynched on that very day and the real rapist would have never been caught (at least not for that, he was in jail for something different already).
Trump wanted to reintroduce the death penalty for them.
The system failed them, they spent years in prison, but since humanity had already slightly advanced by then, they at least survived it instead of being tied to a tree in Central Park.
But this is what you wish for, your own words, so if someone is backing away from anything here it's you.
