And you're exactly right, it's well studied, well documented and proven.
This is the product of evolutionary biology. Society is basically split down the middle with opposing views with little or no ability to see, accept and understand the other side. This is true of all cultures. It is that constant argument in everything which enables us as a society to define the center and the safer answers (from a group survival perspective). Your brain also uses this very same "team of rivals" framework in basic decision making where countless arguments/counter-arguments are weighed in even the most simple decisions and where only the top 1-2 answers rise to conscious awareness.
