My stepfather spoke French, and English was a second language. My mother - who is Polish (see above) - learned how to speak French. This wasn't because she wanted to talk to my step father in his native tongue, but instead because they spent so much time in France and Belgium. I do not speak French (other than two years in high school), and my brother speaks no French at all.

Years ago when I worked for Lighspeed Cash we had an employee who was born in Egypt, but studied in England (he called cigarettes "fags" lol), and he moved to the United States.... He was a Muslim. I helped him study for his test to become a US citizen. For months we went out to lunch every day, five days a week, and I would quiz him on the questions. He invited me to his swearing in and it was amazing. Brand new American citizens, about to be sworn in, told stories about how they came to the United States with nothing more than the clothes on their back. After six years they've gone to college, gotten married, and have opened up their own business....

This is the kind of people who we want to come to the United States.
