The server's default email setup or an external SMTP... both can get broken or have temporary issues.
In both cases NATS should send a test email daily, and if it's not delivered to the test email box successfully, warn the owners.
Many programs don't notice that emails to affiliates are broken. I'm often naive and skip warning them, thinking they'd notice soon anyway. In most cases, they don't notice in my experience. Their emails are broken for 3 months, 6 months, sometimes even longer.
