Number 1 hit in Holland when the Pope came to Holland and was against condoms, abortion, gays, etcetra.
He never returned to Holland due to all protests. He mostly got ignored, no cheering crowds.

So nothing changes, always there is a religion that hate certain groups.

It was difficult weeks for Cardinal Simonis, who, as the highest bishop of the Netherlands, was responsible for the success of the visit. The 8 May Movement was a thorn in his eye. Just as the supreme shepherd came to the Netherlands, his flock fell apart. Less heavy but no less annoying was the song that turned completely gray in those weeks: "Popie Jopie". Simonis is still very annoyed about that parody of the Pope's visit, from Pisa presenters Henk Spaan and Harry Vermeegen: "This is not how you treat the sacred things that are sacred to others. We should do this once with Mohammed or with an important Imam. Then the entire world of Muslims would be on trial. That we as a Catholic population have had to let this ridiculization go over us for weeks. And we were totally indefensible. "The fact that thanks to the song the whole of the Netherlands knew that the pope would come to visit was a mere consolation.

And that was just one of Simonis's many concerns: "I've had sleepless nights. There were ten days of police in the house, with dogs and such. There were threats, not only to the pope's address, but also to the undersigned. "The threatening letters to Simonis remained secret, but those to the pope could be read by anyone. Everywhere in Amsterdam was a poster with the cheerful call: "F.15,000 reward for liquidating Karol Wojtyla, alias Pope John Paul II. After two previous attempts it must now succeed! "A target was drawn on the head of the pope, on his blessing arm a swastika.

did the Netherlands really want anything to do with a conservative church leader who, according to many, had archaic views of gays and women? There were several anti-pope visit committees that threatened with playful or violent disruptions to the planned visit. Michel van der Plas compiled a bundle with open letters from prominent Catholics to the pope, arguing why the pope should stay at home. There were more such initiatives, culminating in a massive meeting in The Hague on 8 May. More than 10,000 critical Catholics gathered on the Malieveld that day to celebrate the faith - emphatically without the Pope. It was the start of the progressive Eight May Movement.
