I remember that a company kept track of domain searches and then charged premium prices for them. It was reported here and people tried to grab stupid domain names for ten bucks. Lbdjfgteoriit.com type names and then a day later it was fifty bucks or more. It is obvious that they were doing it and then someone found a list of names that had been checked which updated hourly. Domain “thieves” would grab the names and hold them hostage. Why they would publicize the list of names checked, publicly, was never answered and the thinking was that employees were grabbing the names and holding them hostage for big bucks.

I believe someone here was involved in grabbing the name and someone registered some domains to see who would grab them. Big controversy here and I cannot forget the arguments and trouble it caused.

Upsells were everywhere and registration became a pain. Internic charged six dollars for registration and companies offered them for a few bucks. They had to make up the loss in upsells. Newbies fell for it and spent a lot to get listed in search engines. Then the auto submit sites came up to knock down upsells.

I’m remembering sex dot com and the million dollar theft of the domain. That’s another topic n
