It's actually the other way around. Xnxx was already huge like 10 years ago in the TGP days, before they started xvideos.
After that they also bought porno.com, bangbros, legalporno, etc.
And as for Pornhub marketing techniques to be linked from all the mainstream media, they have been doing this for many years, they have a whole team working on just that. I have seen some of the other tubes trying to copy it, but none has been really successful. Camsoda also keeps trying, sometimes they have a bit of luck, but Pornhub is the absolute master in it.

They own quite a lot more than that, too.

I really didn't know. When pornhub did the (short) partnership with Eat24, Eat24 contacted me to do a study with them on the effectiveness of their campaign. It wasn't so much, they've now become grubhub, but it demonstrated that mainstream could advertise on large porn sites without the stigma being a kiss of death. However, as so many content producers have found, the cheap ads don't really produce. You have to really customize, and the large mainstreams don't have time for that model. In other words, it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't a goldmine either.
