Yeah I've heard of doing that, in fact my family's first charcoal grill was made from a barrel, I think my dad made it before I was born, my sister still has it in her yard.
From those pics I'd say your dad is a pro, it takes a lot of knowledge and work to smoke that way.
That's why I went with a traeger, even though I'm mostly retired these days I'm still lazy. I like filling the pellet hopper, turning the damn thing on then lazing on the couch while it does all the work.
A couple weeks ago I did a made a small (maybe 2.25 lb) tri-tip, cooked in less than an hour, after letting it rest for 20 minutes I stood at the kitchen counter with a knife and ate half of it, I just couldn't stop!
