As I understand it a very simple example would be pre-internet you had Yellow Pages - Listings were alphabetical with special characters going first - So companies would name there companies things like "!!!!!!!AAAAbbbb Locksmiths" trying to get a top spot by exploiting the way the system is set up...

Obviously things are far more advanced these days, but that's the principle.....
