Anyone running a quality youtube channel?

I sort of thought youtube was dying off for creators with all the people who bitch about it these days but one of my friends showed me his numbers for a 60k sub channel. The guy is doing $4-5k/month doing about 2 videos a week.

His channel is just over 1 year old now and he did hammer the shit out of videos in the start (almost daily vids for months) but after about 30k subs he sort of eased up on the number of vids per week now averages 2 a week.

He runs a channel on his business type and gives out info on how to get into that business and news from that industry.

I'm curious if anyone is still doing good on youtube these days? (non adult obviously)

Now the problem for my friend is, IMO his niche will plateau or level out. He is pretty much the authority channel on his niche but I'm not sure how much he can continue to grow with out possibly expanding into a sub niche or widening it up a bit.

I'm wondering if it's better to be the big fish in a small pond but be limited, vs being a smaller fish in a bigger pond where it takes more subs to make he same money, but in the end the earning potential is much more due to volume and growth capabilities..
