Its just a regular old knock knock knock. Sounds like knuckles on wood. Not to hard not to soft just like when people knock on wood for good luck or whatever.

Exploding Head Syndrome isn't necessarily painful. I only found out about it because I turned to Google after it happened to me a couple of times. I was on the verge of falling asleep when I heard a loud crash. Loud enough to get me out of bed to investigate but found nothing.
As the wiki page says it's not yet fully understood, but I think there's a good chance it's related to how the body dissipates tension as you fall asleep - it's supposed to happen gradually but every once in awhile you get that whole body jerk. Like that, but with your auditory system, or maybe just a transient stimulation of the auditory nerves.
