Definitely more expensive than Asia. Three month visa on arrival and most people due border runs to Nicaragua or Panama to renew the visa indefinitely.

Residency is pretty easy assuming you have money - make a $60K deposit in a bank there for 2 years or buy a property/business for $200K. In both cases, you can't work for a Costa Rican company (but you're OK to run your own online business). You can apply for citizenship after 7 years.
