How complicated a camera do they want and what sort of budget? For higher end cameras the future is probably mirrorless (Canon R line, Nikon Z line, Sony A7 / A9 lines). There is a pretty nice Canon RP kit with a 24-105 zoom available for $1000, which is a good deal for full frame mirrorless with a decent lens.
