Life in ASEAN isn't cheap anymore. You could live cheaper in Utah, Serbia or South Africa for sure. As far as living in Asia legally, you would need to be at least 50 years old and hold between 10k$ and 20k$ in the bank to satfisfy yearly visa demands. Alternatively, getting married to a local partner demands similar numbers for folks under 50.
Bouncing back and forth between borders to stretch out limits is getting more and more difficult. Cambodia still gives away 1 and 2 year residency permits. Might be an alternative to TH and PH as it is more likely to fit your budget of 1k$. I don't see how you can live on that budget in the bigger cities of TH/PH at all. Of course the more rural areas are cheaper.
