In my home office I have a 4 bay and an 8 bay. Honestly, I would not buy the 4 again because I've already ran into space issues. With your concerns listed, I would recommend jumping right into the 8 bay with 4 x 12 TB drives, the other 4 bays you can leave open until you need them. By that point, the 18 TB drives may be more economical.

My solution with the 8 bay and 4 x 12 TB will run you around $2k and gives you 4 bays to fill later.
Sly that's perfect, brilliant... by far the best option man, TYVM! 8 bay, only use 4 now w/12 TB drives. $940 for the Synology NAS
Plus, every model who comes in my office will see my MASSIVE 8 bay NAS... and some will also get to see my MASSIVE _______!
